Angielski kompozytor, multiinstrumentalista, krytyk i historyk muzyki. Urodził się 23 marca 1944 roku w Londynie. W latach 1961-65 studiował kompozycję, historię muzyki oraz grę na fortepianie i klawikordzie w Royal Academy of Music. W latach 1964-67 studiował muzykologię w King's College w Londynie. W czasie studiów i po ich ukończeniu zajmował się m.in. kolekcjonowaniem i opracowywaniem ludowej muzyki rumuńskiej, wydawaniem dzieł muzyki barokowej (Purcella, Haendla) i muzyki współczesnej. Prowadził wykłady z muzyki w londyńskich szkołach artystycznych. Napisał również libretto do opery Birtwistle'a "Down by the Greenwood Side". W latach 1968-78 zajmował się krytyką muzyczną. Jego książka "Experimental Music - Cage and Beyond" jest klasyczną już pozycją w literaturze poświęconej muzyce po 1945 roku. Współpracując ze Stevem Reichem, Portsmouth Sinfonia, Scratch Orchestra, Love of Life Orchestra i Flying Lizards wykonywał muzykę własną i innych kompozytorów. W 1977 roku założył własny zespół Michael Nyman Band, który stał się wykonawcą większości jego kompozycji. Pod koniec lat osiemdziesiątych nawiązał współpracę z hinduską tancerką Shoban Jeyasingh i francuską grupą Ris et Danseries.
